SecureSpend Card Troubleshooting Guide

Last updated: By the SecureSpend Guide editorial team

Quick Answer

Most SecureSpend card problems come from a few causes: a purchase larger than the balance, a temporary authorization hold, an unregistered card failing an online ZIP code check, or a card that was never activated. Check your balance and recent transactions on the official site first, then contact customer service if the numbers still don't add up.

Nothing's more frustrating than a card being declined at the register when you know there's money on it. The good news is that most prepaid card problems have a handful of predictable causes. Use this guide to work out what's happening with your SecureSpend card and fix it, or to know exactly what to tell customer service.

Start here: Before anything else, check your available balance and recent transactions on the official SecureSpend website (opens in a new tab) or through the number on the back of your card. Most problems become obvious once you can see the transaction history.

How to split a payment at the register

Prepaid cards generally decline a purchase that's even a few cents over the balance, rather than charging what's available. To use up the exact balance:

  1. Check the exact balance first

Use the official site or the phone line, and keep the number handy.

  2. Tell the cashier before they process the payment

Say: "Please charge exactly [amount] to this card, and I'll pay the rest with another method."

  3. Pay the remainder

Use cash or another card for the difference. Not every store or self-checkout supports split payments, so ask first.

Balance looks wrong

If your balance is lower than you expected, check these in order:

  1. Pending transactions. Recent purchases may show as pending for a few days before they settle.
  2. Holds. Gas stations, restaurants, hotels and some online stores reserve more than the final amount. The extra is released later.
  3. Fees. Look for monthly, inactivity, ATM or other program fees in the history. Our fees guide explains each one.
  4. Duplicates. A transaction that appears twice may be a pending authorization alongside the settled charge. One should drop off.
  5. Unrecognized transactions. If you see anything you didn't make, call customer service immediately and ask for the card to be blocked.

If your balance is zero on a card you just bought, the initial load may have failed at the register, or the card may have been tampered with before purchase. Contact customer service with your receipt right away. See our security guide.

Activation errors

"Invalid card" or "card not found"

Re-enter the number slowly, checking for swapped digits. Make sure you're on the correct official website for your card.

Card shows as inactive after purchase

Activation at the register can occasionally fail or take time to process. Wait a little, then check again on the official site. If the card is still inactive, call customer service with the receipt. The receipt proves payment.

Too many attempts

Repeated wrong entries can lock the card temporarily. Stop trying and contact customer service.

Full activation steps are in our activation guide.

Online checkout problems

  • Register the card with your name and U.S. address. See how to register.
  • Enter the billing address exactly as registered, especially the ZIP code.
  • Use your own name as the cardholder name, as registered, not "Gift Recipient".
  • Cover the full total. Tax and shipping count, and some sites add a small verification hold.
  • Check that the merchant accepts prepaid cards. Some subscription services don't.
  • Check the merchant's location. Foreign-based stores may be blocked or charge a foreign fee.

Gas pumps, hotels and restaurants

These merchants commonly authorize more than you'll actually spend:

  • Gas pumps may place a pre-authorization hold and ask for a ZIP code. Pay inside instead, and ask the cashier to authorize a specific amount.
  • Hotels often hold extra money for incidentals at check-in. Ask the amount before handing over the card.
  • Restaurants may authorize the bill plus an allowance for a tip. Keep a small cushion in your balance.

Chip, swipe and tap errors

If the terminal says "card read error" or "please insert chip":

  • Insert the chip fully and leave the card in until the terminal says to remove it. Removing it early is the most common cause of chip errors.
  • If tapping fails, try inserting the chip instead. Not every card supports contactless, and some terminals limit tap amounts.
  • Wipe the chip gently with a soft, dry cloth.
  • If the card fails at several different stores, it may be damaged. See our damaged card steps.

Self-checkout and kiosks

Self-checkout lanes, vending machines, parking meters and transit kiosks often can't split a payment and may place a temporary hold. If a prepaid card with a low balance is declined at a kiosk, use a staffed register where you can ask for a split payment, or use another payment method.

ATM problems

If an ATM rejects your card, first confirm your card actually supports ATM withdrawals and has a PIN. Many gift-style cards don't. Then check daily withdrawal limits and whether the ATM network is supported. Remember that declined ATM attempts can sometimes carry a fee. Verify on the official site

When to contact customer service

Call the number on the back of your card, or use the contact details on the official site, if:

  • You see transactions you didn't make.
  • A new card shows a zero balance or won't activate.
  • A hold hasn't been released after the transaction should have settled.
  • Your card is locked, expired or damaged.
  • You believe a fee was charged in error.

Have ready: the card or its number, your receipt, the date, amount and merchant of the problem transaction, and notes of anything you've already tried. Write down the date, time and any reference number of each call.

We can't fix account problems. SecureSpend Guide is an independent site with no access to cardholder accounts. Only SecureSpend customer service can review your transactions, release holds or replace cards.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my SecureSpend card declined when I have money on it?

Common reasons are a purchase total above the available balance (including tax, tip or a hold), a billing ZIP code mismatch online, a merchant that doesn't accept prepaid cards, a restricted purchase type, or a card that isn't fully activated.

Why does my balance show less than my receipts add up to?

Pending transactions, authorization holds and card fees all reduce the available balance. Compare the transaction history on the official site with your receipts, and report anything you don't recognize.

How long do authorization holds last?

It varies by merchant and issuer, often a few business days. If a hold hasn't dropped off after the transaction should have settled, contact customer service.

The card works in stores but not online. Why?

Usually because the card isn't registered with a billing address, or the address you entered at checkout doesn't match the registration. Register on the official site and enter your details exactly as registered.

Can the store fix a problem with my card?

Generally no. Retailers can confirm a purchase was made and print a receipt, but balance, activation and account problems are handled by SecureSpend customer service.
