Card basics

What is a SecureSpend card?

A SecureSpend card is a prepaid payment card. Money is loaded onto it in advance, and you can spend only that balance wherever the card's payment network is accepted.

Is SecureSpend a credit card or a debit card?

Neither, exactly. It is a prepaid card. It works at the register like a debit or credit card, but it spends money loaded in advance rather than drawing on a bank account or a credit line.

Is SecureSpend Guide the official SecureSpend website?

No. SecureSpend Guide is an independent informational website. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by SecureSpend or its issuer.

Who issues SecureSpend cards?

Prepaid cards are issued by a bank under license from a payment network. The issuing bank for your card is named on the back of the card and in your Cardholder Agreement.

Does a SecureSpend card help build credit?

Generally no. Prepaid card activity is not reported to the credit bureaus, so it neither builds nor harms your credit score.

Do I need a bank account to use the card?

No. You can spend the balance without a bank account. Linking a bank account for reloads, if your card supports it, is optional.

Is there a credit check to get a SecureSpend card?

Prepaid cards don't require a credit check. Reloadable prepaid cards may require identity verification when you register.

Activation and registration

How do I activate my SecureSpend card?

Many retail prepaid cards are activated at the register when you pay. If your card asks you to activate it, use only the website or phone number printed on the card or its packaging, and follow the prompts.

Why won't my new card activate?

Typos in the card number, activation still processing after purchase, or a failed load at the register are the usual causes. Wait a short time, re-check the details, and contact customer service with your receipt if it still fails.

Do I need to register my card?

Registration is often needed for online purchases that check your billing ZIP code. It is usually required for reloadable cards, and it can help if your card is lost.

What information does registration ask for?

Typically your name, U.S. address, ZIP code and contact details. Reloadable cards may also ask for identity details such as a date of birth. Only enter these on the official SecureSpend website.

Can I register a card I received as a gift?

Yes. The person using the card should normally register it with their own name and address so online merchants can verify the billing details.

Can I activate or register my card on this site?

No. This site has no forms and never collects card data. Use only the official SecureSpend website or the phone number on your card.

Checking your balance

How do I check my SecureSpend card balance?

Use the official SecureSpend website, typing the address yourself, or call the customer service number printed on the back of your card. Keep receipts as a backup record.

Can I check my balance on a third-party website?

You shouldn't. Third-party "balance checkers" are a common way scammers collect card numbers. Use only the official site or the number on your card.

Why is my available balance lower than expected?

Pending transactions, authorization holds from gas stations, hotels or restaurants, and card fees can all reduce the available balance. Review the transaction history on the official site.

What is the difference between available balance and pending transactions?

The available balance is what you can spend right now. Pending transactions are purchases that were approved but haven't settled yet. Their amounts are already set aside.

Is checking my balance free?

Online and automated phone balance checks are often free, but some cards charge for ATM balance inquiries or live-agent calls. Check your card's fee schedule.

Fees

What fees does a SecureSpend card have?

Prepaid cards may have purchase, monthly, ATM, inactivity, reload, replacement and foreign transaction fees. Your card's exact fees are on the packaging, in the Cardholder Agreement and on the official site.

Is there a fee to buy the card?

Retail prepaid cards commonly charge a one-time purchase fee at the register in addition to the amount loaded. The amount is shown on the packaging.

Can an inactivity fee reduce my balance?

Yes, if your card has one. For gift-type cards, federal rules generally allow inactivity fees only after 12 months without activity and no more than once per month.

Do ATMs charge extra fees?

ATM owners often add a surcharge, shown on screen before you confirm. This is separate from any fee your card program charges.

Why doesn't this site list exact fee amounts?

Fees are set by the issuer, can differ between card versions and can change. We only publish what we can verify, so we explain each fee type and point you to the official sources for current amounts.

Using your card

Where can I use my SecureSpend card?

Generally at U.S. merchants that accept the card's payment network, in stores and online, up to your available balance and within the issuer's limits.

Can I use the card for online shopping?

Usually yes. Register the card with your name and ZIP code first, and enter those details exactly at checkout to avoid declines.

Can I use the card at gas stations?

Yes, but pumps may place a pre-authorization hold and ask for a ZIP code. Paying inside for a set amount is often easier with a prepaid card.

Can I get cash from an ATM?

Only if your card has a PIN and allows ATM access. Many gift-style prepaid cards don't allow cash withdrawals.

Can I use more than the card balance on a purchase?

No. A purchase above your available balance is usually declined. Ask the cashier to charge the exact card balance and pay the remainder another way.

Can I use the card outside the U.S.?

It depends on the card. Some prepaid cards are U.S.-only, and others charge a foreign transaction fee. Check your card's terms before you travel.

Can I use the card for subscriptions?

Sometimes. Some merchants don't accept prepaid cards for recurring billing, and renewals fail once the balance runs out.

Reloading

Can I reload my SecureSpend card?

Only if your specific card is reloadable. Many gift-style prepaid cards are one-time-load only. Check your packaging, your Cardholder Agreement or the official site.

How can I add money to a reloadable prepaid card?

Common methods are direct deposit, bank transfer and cash at participating retailers. Available methods and fees depend on your card.

Can I transfer my balance to another card?

Prepaid cards generally don't support card-to-card balance transfers. Offers to "transfer" your balance for you are a common scam.

Lost cards, expiration and problems

What should I do if my card is lost or stolen?

Contact SecureSpend customer service immediately using the number you saved from the card or the official site. Ask them to block the card, report unauthorized transactions, and ask about a replacement.

Can I recover my balance if my card is lost?

It depends on your card type, whether it was registered, how fast you report it, and your Cardholder Agreement. Registered cards are generally much easier to recover.

Does my money expire when the card expires?

Not necessarily. For gift-type prepaid cards, federal rules generally require funds to last at least five years. If the card expires with money on it, contact customer service about a replacement.

How do I cancel my card and get the remaining money?

Contact customer service and ask how to close the card and receive the remaining balance. A fee or processing time may apply.

Why was my card declined?

Common causes include insufficient available balance, authorization holds, a ZIP code mismatch online, a merchant that doesn't accept prepaid cards, or a card that isn't activated.

Security and scams

Is it safe to give my card number to someone over the phone?

Only if you made the call to the official number printed on your card. Never give card details to someone who contacted you.

Someone asked me to pay with a prepaid card. Should I?

No. Government agencies, utilities and legitimate businesses don't demand payment by prepaid card. This is a well-known scam tactic.

How do I report a prepaid card scam?

Contact the card issuer immediately, then report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Online scams can also be reported to the FBI at IC3.gov.

Does SecureSpend Guide ever ask for card details?

Never. This site has no forms or balance checker. Anyone claiming to be us and asking for card details is an impersonator.
